This finger knit basket pattern is easy to make with whatever yarn you have handy and in whatever size you like.

Finger knitting is a fun, easy and fast way to make a long strand of knit fabric, and with a little coiling and sewing it’s easy to make into different shapes like this finger knit basket.

Supplies

I made my finger knit basket with three strands of worsted weight yarn held together. You can also use bulky or super bulky yarn, or a combination of yarn weights that makes relatively solid stitches.

My basket weighs 78 grams, so it was probably around 145 yards of yarn total. One of the strands is Red Heart Super Saver (the red one), and the turquoise one is Knit Picks Mighty Stitch. The third strand is random bits from my stash and I used several little odd balls for that one.

In addition to yarn you’ll need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for sewing your basket together.

Size

You can make your finger knit basket any size and shape that you want. Mine is about 6 inches/15.25 cm across at the base and 5 inches/12.7 cm tall.

I made it with a strand of finger knitting that is 10 feet, 4 inches long (that’s a little more than 3 meters).

Holding three strands of yarn together, or whatever yarn you want to use, make a long finger knit chain. I just changed colors whenever I ran out by tying the strands together, but you can also leave ends to weave in if you want.

To determine if your chain is long enough for the basket you want to make, just coil it around on a flat surface until the base is the size you want, then stack the chain on itself to make the sides of your basket.

When you like the size of basket you are getting, bind off.

You can start by using the yarn tail or join in a new piece of yarn for your sewing. Begin to coil the knitting on itself and sew through the stitches on each side to secure them to each other.

It’s easier to keep this even if you leave the coil flat on the table while you sew it instead of trying to hold it in your hands.

When the base is the size you want, decide which side is the inside and which the outside, then start to sew the knitting on top of the edge of the base and continue around until you run out of knitting.

Sew the end of the knitting to the top edge of the basket.

This finger knit basket is really quick and easy to make and a fun way to use some stash. And also hold some stash! You could make one even bigger to use a bunch of your odd balls if you like.
