This double knitting washcloth is a great way to practice double knitting (aka double stockinette stitch), a technique that makes a double-sided fabric with stockinette stitch showing on each side.
It’s actually really easy to do with a single color, and this thick and squishy washcloth might just become your new favorite.
Supplies

For my washcloth I used about 35 yards of Madlandia Hue-Mongous, a 100 percent cotton yarn that says its light weight but also says to knit with size 7-8 US/4.5-5 mm knitting needles, so a worsted weight cotton yarn would work here too.
I used size 8 US/5 mm knitting needles. You’ll also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge
Gauge isn’t critical for this double knitting washcloth pattern, but my washcloth came out to about 15 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches/10 cm on one side of the double knit fabric.

Size
You can make your washcloth whatever size you like. Mine is about 5 inches/12.7 cm square.
How to Make a Double Knitting Washcloth

The only tricky thing about double knitting is remembering that you need to cast on twice as many stitches as you need for the width you want. Here I cast on 40 stitches, so there will be 20 stitches per side on the finished double knit washcloth.
If you want to change your stitch count, double knitting is worked on an even number of stitches.
I used the long-tail cast on but you can use whatever cast on method you like.

*Knit 1. Slip 1 with the yarn in front. Repeat from * across.

Repeat this row to desired length. I like a square washcloth but you can do whatever you like.

Bind off. I tried a few different methods on this one and decided I liked the no-yarn bind off best. The zig-zag effect on the edge is fun.

Cut yarn and use the yarn needle to poke in between the layers to hide the yarn ends. If your fabric looks uneven, give it a good stretch in both directions to help set the stitches.
