This easy crochet headband pattern uses third loop half double crochet to give it a ribbed look that’s also nice and stretchy to fit a variety of heads. It doesn’t use a lot of yarn so you can use leftovers from another project, and it’s pretty fast to stitch, too!

Supplies

For my easy crochet headband I used leftovers from my fisherman’s rib hat knitting pattern, which is a gorgeous yarn from local to me dyer Three Birds Yarn. This is a worsted weight yarn and the headband used 66 yards.

Use any worsted weight yarn you have handy for this project.

I used a size K/10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook because it was on my desk. Whatever size hook you like with worsted weight yarn is totally fine.

You’ll also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle for finishing the headband.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this easy crochet headband, but I got 18.5 stitches and 14 rows per 4 inches/10 cm in third loop half double crochet.

Size

The size of your headband may vary slightly depending on your gauge and the size of your head, but mine is about 3 inches/7.6 cm wide and 20 inches/50.8 cm around. My head is about 23 inches/58.4 cm around where the headband hits, and this amount of stretch feels good to me.

How to Make the Easy Crochet Headband

This headband uses third loop half double crochet stitches, which is an easy stitch pattern once you understand what to do. It makes a fabric that looks sort of like knit ribbing, and is similarly somewhat stretchy.

Third loop HDC works on an even number of stitches. You can chain as many as you like for the width you want, then add 2 for the height of the stitch. These last 2 stitches, as well as the turning chain at the end of each row, do not count as a stitch.

To begin, chain 16.

Beginning in the third chain from the hook, work 14 half double crochet stitches across. Chain 2.

Turn the project over, and work a third loop half double crochet in each of the 14 stitches across. Chain 2.

Repeat this row until your headband is your desired length, or a couple of inches/5 cm or so shorter than your actual head measurement. If you’re making the easy crochet headband for someone else, 20 inches/50.8 cm is a pretty good guess.

Fasten off the last stitch and cut yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.

Thread the tail onto a yarn needle and sew the short ends of the headband together.

This easy crochet headband doesn’t take much time at all to make and is a great crochet gift idea.
