About Yeezhee
Yeezhee is a company that produces crochet kits that are meant to be beginner friendly and innovative. They sent me a basket kit as well as a granny square bag kit to review (and I’ll get to that one soon and link it here when it’s ready).
There are so many crochet kits on the market these days, and I intend to try a bunch of them, but since Yeezhee reached out we’ll start there. I hadn’t really heard of them before they emailed me, but looking around their website I see that they have kits for bags, hats, coasters and baskets, as well as bundles where you can buy kits for multiple projects at a discount over buying them separately.
The Yeezhee Crochet Basket Kit
The Yeezhee crochet basket kit comes in three colors: white, teal and a lighter blue. The contrasting color is red, white or orange, respectively.
Each kit comes with two balls of the main color and a bundle of the contrasting color, a crochet hook, two of the cutest little locking stitch markers you’ve ever seen and a yarn needle. So basically everything you would need other than scissors.
The yarn is a stretchy T-shirt style yarn and it is super soft. I kinda wish they sold it on its own! If you’ve never worked with T-shirt yarn before, it’s a little different from regular yarn because it’s both stretchy and firm somehow, but it’s pretty easy to get the hang of.
The hook is a branded, ergonomic style hook, size 7 mm (there’s not really a US size that is 7 mm, but it’s similar to an L/11/8 mm.
The hook feels good to use but my only complaint about it is that the shank is really short. I found myself running into the top of the grip a lot when making stitches, because I want to pull back more than it allowed. Other than that it’s a fine hook, and of course you could use your own if you have one.
Making the Basket
The Yeezhee crochet basket kit also includes a printed booklet with instructions. If you’re a complete beginner or just prefer to work from a video, there’s also a full video tutorial you can access. If you have a little bit of crochet experience, this project will be no problem for you.
You’ll need to know how to:
- make a magic loop
- chain
- single crochet in rounds, and crochet in the front and back loop
- center single crochet, aka waistcoat stitch
- work with multiple colors
If you don’t want to follow along with the video, there are photos in the instructions. The only thing that’s not super clear in the booklet is how to manage the yarn when you change colors, but I assumed you were meant to carry along and crochet over the color you weren’t working with, which the video confirmed.
And if you just want to look at the pattern without any photos, that’s also printed in the booklet.
There are also photo tutorials at the back for holding the yarn and crochet hook, making a magic ring, yarn overs, chains, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, center single crochet and changing color. I assume this section is the same in all the books since half double and double crochet aren’t used in this pattern.
I messed up the first skein of yarn and didn’t pull from the center, which made it harder to work with. Also, I found it a lot easier to use the contrasting color after I rolled it into a ball instead of just working from the bunch that was in the kit.
The stitches are really firm so you might need to take some breaks as you work, but this is a super fast project that I finished in a day.
I really like the look of it and immediately filled it with a bunch of yarn. As you’ll probably do, too. It’s very sturdy and stands up on its own, though my base still had a hole in the bottom because I couldn’t pull my magic loop tight enough to close it.
You’ll also notice in my pictures that you can see some of the red yarn through the white stitches. That is somewhat the nature of carrying yarn, particularly when the colors are highly contrasting. I don’t mind it, but if that bothers you it’s something to be aware of with this project.
Is the Yeezhee Crochet Basket Kit Worth It?
I had a lot of fun making this little basket, and I’m already scheming what to do with the leftover yarn. My husband said a project like this would be fun if you were traveling on an airplane and wanted something that had all the supplies and you could just pack it and go. (Of course don’t take scissors on a plane.) He’s right, but it would also be a fun gift for you or someone else who is dabbling in crochet and doesn’t already have a ton of supplies.
The project is quick, easy and straightforward. I don’t know as I’d recommend it as a first project, since there are a few kind of advanced-beginner skills here (working in the round, changing colors, front and back loops, etc.) but it could be a good skill-building project for a stitcher with a couple of projects under their belt.
This basket kit retails for $29.97, which is not bad considering the cost of T-shirt yarn in general. The yarn and supplies are good quality, and I could see using the hook again if I can train myself not to run into the handle so much.
This would be a fun gift for a budding crocheter in your life, or make it as a gift for someone who needs something cute to hold little things.
Also check out their website for some cute free amigurumi patterns, granny square variations and free Halloween patterns. So fun!
Have you ever tried a Yeezhee crochet basket kit or another one of their kits? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
