This crochet shell stitch scarf is a lot of fun to stitch and is great to work in one or two colors. I used two colors to clear out some space in my stash, and made a super cute, slightly lacy scarf for spring.
Shell stitch is an easy crochet stitch pattern made up of double crochet and single crochet stitches. It’s a great sort of fancy looking stitch that’s still totally approachable for beginners.
Supplies

For this scarf you’ll need about 450 yards of DK/light/number 3 weight yarn. I used part of a really old ball of Lion Brand Baby Soft, which is still produced but I don’t think this color is made any more. Mine is color lavender; the currently produced dusty lilac is similar but lighter. The second color is a full skein of Brown Sheep Prairie Spun DK in the color half and half.
If you have a full skein of Baby Soft you should be able to make the scarf in one color if you want.
You’ll also need a size H/8/5 mm crochet hook.
Gauge
Gauge isn’t critical for this crochet shell stitch scarf, but I got about 4.3 stitches and 2 rows per inch/2.5 cm in shell stitch.

Size
My scarf is about 5.75 inches/14.6 cm wide and 6 feet/1.8 meters long. Adjust the length to the amount of yarn or your desired length. The stitch multiple is 6 plus 1 if you want to change the width.

How to Make a Crochet Shell Stitch Scarf

Chain 26 and work a row of single crochet across to give you 25 stitches total. (The last chain is the turning chain for the first row.)
Begin to work in shell stitch as follows. Note: I like a chain 2 to count as a double crochet but if you like 3, use 3 instead.

Row 1: chain 1 and single crochet in the last stitch from the previous row. *Skip 2 stitches, then work 5 double crochet in the next stitch. Skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat from * across, ending the row with a skip 2 and single crochet in the last stitch.

Row 2: chain 2 and work 2 double crochets in the last stitch from the previous row. *Skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch (which is the top of the shell from the previous row). Skip 2 stitches, then work 5 double crochet in the next stitch (this is the single crochet from the previous row). Repeat from * to last 3 stitches. Skip 2 stitches, and work 3 double crochets in the last stitch.

Repeat these 2 rows to desired length. If you want to change colors, do so when you have worked half the length. In my case I did 3 feet, or 91.4 cm, in purple before switching to white.

When you’re ready to finish the scarf, work a row of single crochet, fasten off, cut yarn and weave in ends.
And there you have it! This crochet shell stitch scarf is a lot of fun to make and great to throw in your bag when the weather gets warmer but there might still be a bit of a chill in the evenings or in cold buildings.
