This moss stitch baby blanket crochet pattern came about from me just seeing what I could make with the yarn I had available. It’s a good example of the way I like to make baby blanket patterns up as I go along (detailed in my post on how to make a crochet baby blanket).

The good thing about moss stitch is it works on any even number of stitches, so you can easily make yours bigger if you want (bearing in mind that it will take more yarn).

Supplies

For my blanket I used pretty much all of three skeins of Bernat Softee Baby Jacquards, which is a weight 3/light/DK yarn that has 287 yards per skein, so I used about 860 yards total. (That’s all I had because that was all my store had in the same colorway. I love a good challenge.) Mine is in the colorway Faded Blooms.

I also used the hook suggested on the ball band, which is G/6/4mm.

A pair of scissors and a yarn needle will be handy for finishing this project, too.

Gauge

Gauge isn’t all that important if you don’t care what size blanket you end up with, but if you want to do yours the same way I did, I got 24 stitches and 25 rows per 4 inches/10 cm in moss stitch crochet.

Size

My blanket is 20 inches square (that’s 50.8 cm) before adding the border. With the border it is [CQ] 24 inches/almost 61 cm square. Again, if you have more yarn you can start with a longer chain and/or make a wider border.

For my blanket I did a foundation single crochet instead of a chain, because I find it easier than working into a long chain like this requires. It doesn’t look the same as the moss stitch, so it does stand out when you add the border, so up to you if you want to go this way or do a chain and immediately start the moss stitch.

The foundation row is that messy looking bit below the border at the top of the photo.

So to make yours like mine either chain 121 or do a single crochet foundation row of 120 stitches and then chain 1 at the end before beginning the moss stitch.

Work in moss stitch until the piece is square. If you need a refresher, that’s single crochet 1, *chain 1, skip 1 stitch, single crochet 1. Repeat from * across. Chain 1, turn, and continue in pattern, working single crochets in the chain spaces and chains over the single crochet stitches across.

Turn up the side and begin working moss stitch in rounds.

I did three stitches in the corner stitch but I think two might have worked better.

I used almost two whole skeins on the square part and one skein on the border, which I worked until I was almost out of yarn.

Fasten off, cut yarn and weave in any ends.

If you want it to be nice and square, block it when you are done. Blocking doesn’t work the wonders with acrylic yarn that it does with wool, but even just washing and lying flat to dry will improve the look of your blanket.
