These crochet market bag patterns cover a range of patterns and designs so you can carry your groceries in style, whether from the store or the farmer’s market.
Mesh Market Bags

The classic style for crochet market bags is a string bag or open mesh pattern. These are great because the crush up small to fit inside another bag or stash in your car, but they open up to hold a lot of goodies.
Bernat’s string market bag has a solid base worked from the center out and a mesh stitch for the body. The straps are wide and solid to make them easier to hold or throw over your shoulder.
Hverdagsmagi has a cute rustic market bag that has a round floral mandala as the base for a little extra whimsy. (The site is available in English and Norwegian, but the English translation looks good.)

The Linen Grocery Tote from Purl Soho is even more of a chain fabric with just a tiny little base of single crochet stitches. It’s a super lightweight bag that works up super fast and is great for holding larger items that won’t fall through the holes.

Evelyn and Peter’s Magical Market Bag is magic because it has a ton of stretch, allowing it to hold lots of stuff. It’s worked with single crochet stitches and uses different hook sizes to make the stitches different sizes.
Malloo Knits’ Market Bag (despite the name it’s a crochet project) uses an x stitch to make the mesh, which is explained in the pattern and includes a video tutorial.
These foldable mesh bags from Nicki’s Homemade Crafts have a fruity twist: the bag folds into a fruit-shaped pocket for easy storage in your purse until you need it. The fruit becomes the base of the bag when you use it, and there are lots of fruits to choose from so you can make it your own.
Jewels and Jones has a mesh market bag that’s worked flat from the top of one side, through the body to the top of the other side. This makes a big sort of oval bag that holds a lot of stuff. The pattern includes two size options.
The mesh bag from Pattern Princess is stitched in a semi-circle and includes double crochets and puff stitches. It’s a little more solid than some of these other options but still makes a stretchy mess when things are added to it.
More Solid Crochet Market Bag Patterns

I don’t know how to classify these crochet market bag patterns but they aren’t as open as the mesh patterns, giving them a little more substance for heavy-duty carrying.
The one skein farmer’s market bag from Sewrella uses V stitch (a combination of chains and double crochets) on the sides and has a solid, flat, round base.
Crochet Dreamz has a fun market bag that uses shell stitch and comes in two sizes for all your shopping needs. It’s worked in a tube, with the handles worked onto the top and then you seam the bottom.
Hobbi’s On the Go bag uses cluster stitches, where you work into several stitches then close them all off together, to make a fun texture. I love the V-shape of the straps on this one, which are stitched as part of the bag.
This crochet market bag from The Loophole Fox uses half double crochets and chains to make a bag with smaller holes than the mesh ones above. It has a solid, flat, round base and uses single crochet for the handle.

Speaking of grannies, The Crochet Crowd has a super cute modern granny boho bag worked with a cake yarn to make it colorful without a lot of work.
The Bright Days Bag from The Unraveled Mitten would be a great one for using leftover yarn so you can make it in colorful stripes. It uses a fun textured stitch pattern on the body and has a solid base worked in double crochet.
Grocery Bag Style Patterns

Instead of the traditional market bag shape, these crochet market bag patterns are more like the plastic shopping bags they replace.
My Block Street Market Bag falls in this category, as it’s the general size and shape of a plastic bag but a lot more fun. I worked mine in two colors and it uses lemon peel stitch for a quick, easy and durable project.
The LIPARI Bag from Evgeniya Dupliy (free on Ravelry) looks just like you’d imagine a crocheted grocery bag to look like. It uses single and double crochet stitches and is worked in pieces that are seamed together for extra durability.
The Bobby Bucket Bag is sort of a cross between a traditional shopping bag and a string bag worked in chunky yarn. This design from Mother Bunch is worked in half double crochet starting with a round base but makes a nice solid fabric like a more traditional bag.
Heart Hook Home has the Wave Market Bag, which has a tote bag shape and a fun wave and openwork pattern on the sides.
The Day at the Market Bag from Heather’s Craft Corner uses solid stitches throughout to make a super sturdy bag for shopping or toting to the library.
