I recently wrote about how to crochet with embroidery floss, and I wanted to come up with a project you could try that would actually make something useful, so I made this crochet bookmark.

It uses an easy mesh pattern that is all chains and slip stitches (plus one row of single crochet on each end). Despite being worked with embroidery floss it’s actually a pretty fast project.

Supplies

For this crochet bookmark you’ll need embroidery floss. I used three colors but you can use as many or as few as you like. I stared with some leftovers from another project, then decided to repeat the colors on the other side. I’d say this probably used two full skeins, or about 20 yards, of embroidery floss, but your usage may vary.

Here I used a craft embroidery floss that isn’t meant to be separated into strands. If you have six-strand floss, use all six strands. Or make it smaller with fewer strands, but you will also want a smaller crochet hook.

Speaking of hooks, I used a 2.25 mm/B hook. You’ll also need scissors and a sewing needle for finishing.

Size

My crochet bookmark is 2.5 inches wide and 7 inches long (that’s 6.35 by 17.78 cm) after light blocking. If you want a wider bookmark, this mesh stitch works on an even number of stitches, so chain an odd number to start.

You can also make it longer or shorter by crocheting more or fewer rows, of course. Gauge is not important for this project so your size may vary.

How to Make a Crochet Bookmark with Embroidery Floss

Chain an odd number. Mine is 21 to make 20 stitches to work with.

Skipping the chain next to the hook, work single crochet across. 20 stitches.

Chain 2, skip the first stitch and work a slip stitch into the next stitch.

Repeat across.

Chain 2 and turn. Work a slip stitch into the first chain from the previous row.

Chain 2 and work a slip stitch in the next chain. Repeat across.

Repeat the last row as long as you like.

When you change colors, work the chain 2 at the beginning of the row in the new color.

When the bookmark is about the length you would like, work another row of single crochet — two stitches into each chain. 20 stitches.

Fasten off.

Finishing Your Bookmark

I did a little bit of blocking to open up the mesh pattern. I just got the bookmark wet, stretched it out a bit and pinned it to a towel to dry.

Because my thread is cotton, which tends to hold when stretched rather than springing back, this should be enough to keep it looking good.

I wove in my ends after it was dry just to make sure none of the ends would pop out when I stretched it.

You can make a crochet bookmark with embroidery floss in any relatively flat stitch pattern you like.

If you give this one a try I’d love to hear how it went for you!
