Ponytail holders are uncomfortable and no fun to wear, so let’s make it nice with this crochet scrunchie pattern.
I don’t know why my hair has been annoying me so much lately, but I’ve been going for ponytails a lot recently. The only problem is the ponytail holders I have are both ugly and uncomfortable. But because we can crochet we can fix that.
Supplies to Crochet a Scrunchie

All you need to be able to crochet a scrunchie is a ponytail elastic of some kind, some yarn and a crochet hook to go with it.

This yarn is all from my stash. I’m not sure what the multicolored blue and green one is, but the black one is Caron Simply Soft Party and the other kind of blue green one is Lion Brand Jeans. All are medium/worsted/weight 4. The two blue/green ones each used 6 grams or about 15 yards, while the black one used 11 grams, which in that yarn is more like 10 yards.
I used a size H/8/5.5 mm crochet hook for all of them.
But this same idea would be so cute worked in leftover sock yarn, or a bit of bulky left over from your favorite sweater. Use yarn you already have that makes you smile is all I’m saying.

Starting Your Crochet Scrunchie
To crochet a scrunchie all you have to do is make stitches around the elastic. You can use whatever stitch you like. I show a few options here but you can just play with it to make them as big or as small as you like.

Each style started the same, with single crochet stitches worked around the elastic. To do this first make a loop in the yarn and place it in front of the elastic.

Take your hook under the elastic to the back and pull through a loop and make a single crochet stitch.

Take the yarn tail and put it alongside the elastic so you’ll crochet over it and make another single crochet stitch. At this point your don’t have to hold on because the stitches are locked in.

Keep single crocheting around until the whole elastic is covered. This is 33 stitches.

Stretch the elastic and then add some more stitches. This is around 50 stitches.
When you feel good about the coverage, work a slip stitch to join the last stitch and the first stitch.

Stretch the elastic and find the yarn end that you’ve been stitching over. Pull it out so that it’s flat inside the stitches and trim the excess or weave it back in.
Crochet Scrunchie Options
Honestly that’s all you have to do to make your ponytails a little more comfortable, but it doesn’t really look like a scrunchie at this point, so let’s add some more stitching.

For this one I did a round where I worked two single crochets in each stitch around, then did a slip stitch to join the beginning and end and fastened off.

This one has two double crochets in each stitch around.

And this one has a round with two single crochets in each stitch, followed by a round of double crochet in the back loop only.
All of these crochet scrunchie ideas are so easy to do but really fun to make and I’m sure you can come up with your own variations, too.

These are super comfortable to wear, and I haven’t had a problem with them sliding out. And they’re comfy around your wrist, too. I’ll just be over here making crochet scrunchies to match all my knit and crochet projects!
