I don’t usually wear makeup, so while other people might call these makeup remover pads (which they totally can be!) for me it’s just a face scrubbie crochet pattern.

Use them like tiny washcloths or with makeup remover to keep everything clean. The cotton yarn gives them a little scrubbing power. Best of all they’re super fast to crochet, and I have a couple of different methods for you.

Supplies for Making Face Scrubbies

The best thing about this face scrubbie crochet pattern is that you can use all of your cotton yarn scraps from other projects. It doesn’t really matter what yarn weight you use, but mine are all worsted/medium/yarn weight 4 since that’s the most common cotton knitting yarn.

The solid blue and the green and white are both Lily Sugar’n Cream; the pink is a long discontinued cotton.

If you use the same weight I did and make yours a similar size, you’ll need 5 or 6 grams per scrubbie, which is about 8 to 10 yards. You can of course make them as big or as small as you like, or keep stitching until you run out of yarn. Mine are a little variable in size but are about 3 inches/7.6 cm across.

You’ll also need a crochet hook in a corresponding size to the yarn. I used a H/8/5mm. A yarn needle will also be helpful for weaving in ends.

Choose Your Scrubbie Adventure

I used a couple of different methods to make my crochet face scrubbies, so you can mix and match methods that you prefer.

They are worked from the center out so you can choose to start with a magic circle or a chain that’s joined with a slip stitch.

I also used two different methods for increasing. Some have increases that are worked one stitch farther apart in each round, while others have a round without increases followed by a round with increases. There’s no difference in performance.

You could even make these as knit scrubbies instead if you know how to knit. You’d start with just a few stitches on a set of double pointed knitting needles, then increase as described below in knit stitches instead of crochet stitches. When you’ve reached your desired size, bind off loosely.

How to Start Your Scrubbie

Both face scrubby crochet patterns start with 5 stitches, but there are two different ways to get there.

You can start with a magic ring (or a double magic ring, if you’d rather) and work 5 single crochet stitches into the ring.

Or you can chain 5 and work a slip stitch in the first chain to join into a ring. Then work 5 single crochet stitches into the ring.

Face Scrubbie Crochet Pattern Options

Here again you have two options, or if there’s another way you like to make a crochet circle you can do that, too.

I feel like this version is more traditional for crochet. After you have your 5 stitches, work 2 single crochets in each stitch on the next round (giving you 10 stitches).

For the next round, single crochet once in the first stitch and twice in the second. Repeat around. 15 stitches total. If you want you can use a locking stitch marker to note the end of the round.

On the next round, work a single crochet in the next two stitches, then two in the next stitch. Repeat around. 20 stitches.

Continue in this manner, working one more single crochet between the increases on each round to desired size.

If you have extra yarn you can work a last round that is just single crochet. Otherwise just work a slip stitch into the first stitch of the last round, cut yarn, fasten off the last stitch and weave in the ends.

The other option I think of as more of the knitter’s version (which is probably why it’s the first version I made).

Once you have your 5 stitches, work 2 single crochets in each stitch around. 10 stitches total.

Work the next round in single crochet with no increases.

Work 2 single crochets in each stitch around on the next round. 20 stitches total. Work the next round in single crochet with no increases.

Continue working these 2 rounds to your desired size. When you get to the end of the last round, work a slip stitch to join the round, fasten off, cut yarn and weave in ends.

This face scrubbie crochet pattern is super simple to make and once you start using them, you’ll want to make a lot of them to use to wash your face, remove makeup and more. It’s an easy sustainable swap that helps you use up leftover yarn, too. Win, win!
