This embroidered Christmas ornament is quick and easy to make with the help of an iron on embroidery transfer. You can find all sorts of images to use in a project like this, or you can draw your own.

Materials

I stitched my embroidered Christmas ornament on a piece of an old sheet. Cotton fabric is great for this and you just need a small amount. My ornament is 4 inches/10 cm across but of course you can make them any size you like. You’ll need two pieces of fabric, which can match or not as you like.

You’ll need an iron on or peel and stick embroidery pattern, or you can draw your own. I’d recommend using heat erasable pen for a project like this.

Then you’ll also need embroidery floss and a needle, a hoop if you like, a little bit of stuffing if you want to stuff it (I used yarn ends) and a bit of ribbon if you want to add a hanger. And scissors for cutting thread and fabric.

How to Make an Embroidered Christmas Ornament

First prepare your fabric by ironing it. Follow the package directions for your transfer (here’s how to use iron on transfers, or I show peel and stick in the post about embroidery on T-shirts) or draw your design.

I used back stitch and French knots for my design because some of the lines were really close together, but you can use whatever stitches you like to make your design.

Because my initials are SEW and I was stitching a sewing machine, I couldn’t resist adding my initials. You could also add the year or any other words or lettering you like.

I used the shape of the hoop to trim my fabric and made a second piece the same size.

Then I stitched them together using blanket stitch. This is the same technique from making a cross stitch patch, just with fabric. When the stitching was about two-thirds done I lightly stuffed it with yarn ends, then finished up the stitching.

If you’d like to add a ribbon for hanging you can sew or glue it on the back. Or just stick a hook into the stitching on the edge for hanging.

This embroidered Christmas ornament was so fun to make, and it would be a great gift idea for someone whose hobby is stitchable, or stitch flowers, a holiday scene or anything else you like!
