This method to mend holes in sheets with a sewing machine is quick and easy, and not super visible if you use matching thread.
The Holes in Question
One of our cats has a compulsion. She loves to scratch on the end of the bed before she jumps into bed.
This causes a ton of little pulls, as well as some larger holes, in that one corner of the sheet.
It’s down at the bottom, so I don’t feel like I need a perfect way to mend holes in sheets. They’re also small, so I don’t think it’s worth patching (and would be a rather large area to patch, but an old pillowcase would do the job if it comes to that).
I decided this was a job for the sewing machine.
How to Mend Holes in a Sheet
This doesn’t just work for sheets, of course. Any woven fabric can be mended this way, and I’ve seem a similar fix (with reinforcement on the back) used for holes in T-shirts, too.
All you need is a sewing machine that can do a zig zag stitch and thread that coordinates with the sheet or clothing you’re fixing. Or that contrasts, if that’s the look you’re going for. You’ll also need a little pair of scissors or thread snips.
To do this fix, we’re just going to work zig zag stitches over the pulls and holes. I used a medium size stitch on my machine.
Where there are actually holes, you can work back and forth over the area if your machine allows you to stitch backwards. You can also place rows of stitching close to each other to reinforce the area.
I also made some really long lines of stitching between rough spots to help reinforce the whole area.
You can also flip it over and sew again on the other side to make the mends even stronger.
It’s kind of up to you when this is done. I definitely could have done more, and probably will when this sheet next gets used. Holding the sheet up to the light will help you see the areas that most need help (and where you forgot to trim your thread).
