This haunted house craft is great for kids and adults and is a fun way to use all the little bits left over from other projects. I enjoyed doing this myself because it’s a low-stakes art project that always comes out cute and is a fun little addition to your DIY Halloween decor.
If you’re a teacher these would be fun to make with students to decorate the classroom, and they’re a fun seasonal introduction to mixed media collage.
Materials
You can really use whatever you have on hand for this haunted house craft. I used cardboard or paperboard for my base (it’s part of a mailing envelope) but you can make it a paper bag haunted house craft, cut a shape out of a paper plate, or even just use card stock or construction paper.
For the collage elements, you can use markers, paint pens, construction paper, scrapbook paper, buttons, beads, fabric, yarn…really anything you have on hand.
You’ll need scissors for cutting things out and some kind of adhesive. I used tape and regular school glue and both worked fine.
How to Make This Haunted House Craft
First, draw the shape of your house. It’s basically a rectangle with some kind of roof shape.
Cut it out (I used my BeaverBot for this but scissors are fine of course).
Use a marker or paint pen to draw a door shape, plus any windows and other features you might want on your house.
Start cutting things out and sticking things on! There’s really no wrong way to do it. You can cover the whole house in paper and things, or just a few spots.
I love the flat beads and three-dimensional things; they really add to the story, but if you don’t have them it’s totally fine.
This slightly wonky black button was calling my name to be an attic window and the fish skeleton is hilarious.
You decide when it’s done, and I’m not totally sure these are yet, but I also love them just like this.

I would be remiss if I didn’t note that this haunted house craft was inspired by one I found on Pinterest that I’ve seen a lot but never with a link to give credit. But here’s the “original” if you want to see another totally cute and kid-made version.
Of course you could do this kind of mixed media collage with any sort of Halloween shape. I think jack o’lanterns would be super cute, or you could try a ghost or a bat depending on the mood you’re going for.
But if we’re being honest I think the haunted house version is the cutest, and really easy to do. Fun for a group of kids, adults or a mix crafting together. You could mount one to a greeting card, turn a bunch into a garland or just tuck them into your Halloween display. So fun!
