I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of old jeans in my house. They have holes or stains or are otherwise unfashionable, but I can’t bear to part with them.
If you have a pair of jeans you aren’t wearing any more, you can use the pocket and a few simple supplies to make this cute Valentine pocket. Use it on your child’s door to hold a little something special, or to take to school and collect valentines.
Your school-age child could even make one or several of these pockets to give to friends. I did a bit of hand-sewing on mine but you could put it together completely with fabric glue and no sewing at all if you wanted.
They could also be personalized by adding a cutout letter on top of the top heart or writing a name with glitter glue or fabric paint.
Supplies
- A piece of red felt (I used a stiffened glitter felt, but regular felt would work, too)
- Adult-sized pair of jeans
- Red rickrack (optional)
- Small bits of two types of fabric
- Fabric glue (I used Aleene’s Fabric Fusion)
- Sewing supplies (optional)
- Hole punch
- Length of ribbon
Instructions
Trim a pocket off the jeans, leaving a bit of denim around the edges.
Place the pocket on the felt and trim to the size you’d like to frame the pocket. Glue down. You can also sew it if you’d rather.
Glue ric-rac to the edges of the pocket, if desired, so you can’t see the frayed edges of the denim.
Cut out a heart from each piece of fabric. The one at back should be slightly larger than the one on top. I used a cookie cutter to cut the small heart, then eyeballed the larger one from that.
Position the hearts on the pocket. Glue down or sew.
Punch a hole in each of the top corners of the felt.
Tie a knot in one end of the ribbon, thread through one hole from back to front. Thread through the other side from front to back and tie a knot at the back.
Fill the pocket with goodies and hang from a door.
Easy, cute and upcycled all at once. How great is that?
