These granny square Christmas tree ornaments are quick and easy to make, all the more so if you have some granny squares sitting around already. You can make them any size you like and use them as ornaments, to mount onto a greeting card or decorate a bag.
Materials

All you need to make granny square Christmas tree ornaments is a bit of yarn in whatever weight you like and a crochet hook that works with that weight of yarn.
For the multicolored green one I used worsted weight yarn (aka medium or weight 4) and a size G/4mm crochet hook.
The smaller one is worked with embroidery thread and a size B/2.25 mm hook.
Size
You can make your granny squares any size you like. My green one was about 6 inches/15.24 cm before folding and adding the trunk. The finished tree is about 3 inches/7.6 cm across at the base and almost 6 inches/15.24 cm with the addition of the trunk.
The embroidery floss one is almost 4 inches/10 cm square before folding and about 2.25 inches/5.7 cm at the base and 3.75 inches/9.5 cm tall with the trunk.
How to Make a Granny Square
To make granny square Christmas ornaments, you need granny squares. If you don’t already know how to make them, here’s quick rundown.

Start with a chain of 5 and join the chain into a loop with a slipped stitch.

Chain 3 (counts as one double crochet), work 2 double crochets, *chain 2, work 3 double crochets. Repeat from * 2 more times, for 4 total sets of double crochet. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain. Cut yarn and fasten off the chain stitch.

Join the next color of yarn in any corner space. Chain 3, work 2 double crochet, chain 2, work 2 double crochets, chain 1. *Work 3 double crochets, chain 2, work 3 double crochets, chain 1. Repeat from * 2 more times so you have 4 corners. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain. Cut yarn and fasten off the chain stitch.

Join the next color of yarn in any corner space. Chain 3, work 2 double crochet, chain 2, work 2 double crochets, chain 1, work 3 double crochets. *Chain 1, work 3 double crochets, chain 1, work 3 double crochets, chain 2, work 3 double crochet. Repeat from * 2 times, so you have 4 corners and a cluster of stitches between each corner. Chain 1 and join to the first chain with a slip stitch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

The next round (and any subsequent rounds you want to do; both of mine are 4 rounds total) is the same but you have one more set of 3 double crochet clusters between each corner on each consecutive round. So here there are 2 sets in between my corners. If I were to do another round there would be 3 and so on.

Leave a long tail and fasten off the last stitch. I should say weave in ends on all but the last tail of yarn but I will admit I didn’t do so.
Making Granny Square Christmas Ornaments
Now we just need to do a bit of folding and sewing to make the granny square into a tree shape. On my big one I left the full corner visible at the top, while on the embroidery floss one I folded it starting at the corner.

Either way, start with a corner at the top and fold the sides in toward each other and the bottom up to make a triangle shape.

Sew the edges to each other on the back side.

Using a bit of brown yarn/thread, work 3 or 4 stitches in single crochet along the center bottom edge of the tree to make a trunk. The yarn one has 4 stitches and 4 rows while the floss one is 3 stitches and 4 rows.

Weave in ends and add a piece of yarn at the top or just stick your ornament hanger into the top of the tree to hang.
Now that I’ve made a couple of these granny square Christmas ornaments I want to make a bunch more. I think they’d be super cute in the granny square yarn, or you can make them a solid color, or even try different variations of granny squares and see how it looks.
