I have made plenty of coffee cozies for travel coffee cups, but this crochet coffee cup cozy was specifically designed to go on a coffee mug.
I feel like my coffee is always getting cold faster than I can drink it at home, so having a cozy that fits a coffee mug can help it stay a little bit warmer. Plus it’s just cute. And this crochet coffee cup cozy is a super quick and easy project.

Materials
For my cozy I used about 32 yards of medium/worsted/weight 4 yarn, specifically Lion Brand Jeans in color Vintage. I like acrylic yarn for coffee cozies because it’s washable, but you can use wool if you’d rather.
I used a size H/8/5 mm crochet hook. You’ll also need scissors, a yarn needle and a button that’s about half an inch/1.27 cm across. I used a flower shaped button for whimsy, but whatever you have handy is good. And a needle and thread for sewing the button on.

Size
My crochet coffee cup cozy is about 3 inches/7.62 cm tall and 9.5 inches/24 cm long, not counting the button tab. Make yours half an inch to an inch (1.27 to 2.5 cm) shorter than the circumference of your mug and as tall as you like. The stitch pattern I used works on multiples of 3 stitches so adjust accordingly or use whatever stitch pattern you like.
How to Make the Crochet Coffee Cup Cozy
This coffee cup cozy uses wattle stitch, which is a combination of single and double crochet with chains. As mentioned above you need to chain a multiple of 3 for this stitch to work. Below is how I did it.

Chain 15. Single crochet in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn.

Work a single crochet in the first stitch. *Work a single crochet, chain 1 and double crochet all in the next stitch. Skip 2 stitches. Repeat from * to the last stitch, single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Single crochet in the first stitch. *Work a single crochet, chain 1 and double crochet all in the chain 1 from the previous row. Repeat from * across, and single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn. If you need help finding the chain, count the stitches on the previous row, or hunt for the hole between the stitches.
Repeat this row to desired length. Mine was about 9 inches/22.8 cm.

Work a row of single crochet and fasten off. Cut yarn.
Find the center of one short edge and join yarn 1 stitch from the center. Single crochet 3.

Work single crochet on these 3 stitches for about an inch/2.5 cm.

Chain 3 and join to the third stitch with a slip stitch.
Work 1 row of single crochet over the chain. Fasten off.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Decide where you want your button to be and sew it on the cozy using a sewing needle and thread.
And that’s it — your crochet coffee cup cozy is done and ready to use!

You can of course do this same basic thing with any stitch pattern you like, add stripes or whatever else you want to do to personalize it. Now that I’ve made one I’ll probably make a bunch to keep everywhere I drink coffee around the house.
