This one skein shawl knitting pattern is perfect for using a little bit of a great yarn, or making a super fast gift for someone. I knit mine in three days and don’t even feel like I was knitting that much while I was doing it.
This pattern makes an asymmetrical triangular shawl with eyelets along one side. You can change up the method of increasing and/or decreasing to change the look of the shawl. It is mostly worked in garter stitch for a super easy and meditative project.
Shawl Knitting Supplies
As the name implies, for a one skein shawl you’ll need a skein or a ball of yarn. You can use whatever yarn you have on hand that you love and don’t know what to do with. You could of course make it bigger by using more than one ball or skein, or turn it into a stash busting project by combining a few leftovers into one project.
Mine is made with a skein of Madelinetosh’s Tosh Vintage in the colorway I Love yARn, which is one of their line of state-inspired colorways (I think Arkansas might be sold out as I’m not seeing it on the website anymore!). It’s a worsted weight yarn that comes in 200 yard skeins.
I don’t know that I would make this shawl with much less yardage than that, but you can try using whatever you have and see if it comes out a size you like.
You’ll also need knitting needles in a size corresponding to your yarn. I used size 9 US/5.5 mm knitting needles for mine.
A locking stitch marker will be helpful for marking which side is the front/right side, but it’s not essential. You’ll see which side is which pretty quickly. You’ll also need scissors and a yarn needle for finishing.
One Skein Shawl Knitting Pattern
Cast on 5.
Mark the next row as the right side if you want to. Knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 1 , yarn over, knit 1. 6 stitches.
Knit across the next row. (Wrong/back side)
Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to 3 stitches from end, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 1.
Repeat these two rows for pattern until you are almost out of yarn.
Bind off. If, like me, you’re trying to use every bit of your yarn and find you don’t have enough yarn for a bind off, try the no yarn bind off.
Wearing the Shawl
The side of the one skein shawl with the eyelets will be the longest and it’s easiest to wear with that end towards your body, then tuck the shorter ends around your neck.
But you can really wear it however feels good for you, and it will depend a bit on how big it ends up with the yarn you used. If it’s bigger, you might want to wear it more like a scarf, or you can just wrap it however you like.
