This adorable mini Christmas tree cross stitch pattern stitches up in no time and is great to use as a Christmas ornament, to stitch on a greeting card or just make a little decor for a space in your house that needs a little Christmas.

What Makes this Mini Cross Stitch Pattern Special

When I designed this mini Christmas tree cross stitch pattern, I was inspired to make something that I could use a Mason jar lid as the frame.

This adds an extra layer of cuteness and is an easy way to frame a mini project, whether you turn it into an ornament or just display is as is. And it’s a way to upcycle an old lid and ring if you can foods.

For this project you’ll need a small piece of 14-count cross stitch fabric. Mine was roughly 4 inches/10 cm square, but I used the Mason jar lid as a guide to ensure I’d have some overlap when I “framed” it.

You’ll also need three colors of embroidery floss. These are the ones I used:

  • Brown is DMC 838, Very Dark Beige Brown
  • Green is DMC 909, Very Dark Emerald Green
  • Red is J&P Coats 00118, which I think is Bright Red Orange, though it looks more true red to me (which might be DMC 498, Dark Red, or be like me and use what you have in your stash)

The green should be a Christmasy green but the other colors you can use what you have and make your garlands whatever color you want. Or just stitch a solid green tree if you’d rather!

An embroidery needle and a small pair of scissors are also needed.

If you want to use a Mason jar lid to frame, mine is a wide mouth, which is almost exactly 3 inches/7.62 cm across the opening. This design as stitched is a little more than 1.25 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide (that’s about 3.2 by 3.8 cm), so it should fit in a smaller mouth jar lid if that’s all you have, there will just be a lot less space around the design. You’ll also need a hot glue gun and a little ribbon or string if you want to add a hanger.

Trim your fabric if need to be about 4 inches/10 cm square. If you have a frame in mind you can use that to help you cut, just make sure there’s space around all the edges of the outside of your frame.

Fold the fabric in half both ways and mark the center stitch. I used some heat erasable fabric pen, but once I stitched over it you can’t see it anyway. There is no center stitch on this pattern but that will give you a guide as to where the center of the pattern should be close to.

Because this pattern is so small, I counted down rows and stitched from the bottom up, starting with the tree trunk.

Then I stitched all the green. I love how the zig zag stands out like this and honestly it would be cute without filling in the blank stitches.

And finally the red. If you want to.

Finishing the Mason Jar Lid Hanger

You can use a regular 3-inch hoop or mini frame or any other method of display you like, but if you want to use the mason jar lid, do your best to center the design within the “hoop” and use the flat part of the lid to secure it inside the ring.

Use hot glue to hold down the edges on the back side of the ornament.

I added a little loop of ribbon to make it easy to hang on a tree or use to decorate a gift bag, but that’s optional.

Don’t want to use a Mason jar lid? Try making this design into a little pillow like this snowflake cross stitch pattern.

And there you have it! A super cute, super fast and easy to stitch mini Christmas tree cross stitch pattern. And once you know the mason jar lid trick, you can frame all your minis this way, any time of year!
