After making my two-sided circular washcloth knitting pattern, I had a little bit of scrubby yarn left so I decided to make this no waste crochet washcloth. Maybe it will inspire you to use your yarn scraps to make something useful.

Materials

Of course you will use what you have to make your own no waste crochet washcloth, but for me I had about 12 yards of Red Heart Scrubby yarn I wanted to combine with some Lily Sugar’n Cream to hopefully make a roughly square washcloth. I ended up using about 12 yards of that yarn as well.

Because I wanted to hold both strands together I used a US J/10/6mm crochet hook.

You’ll also need scissors and a yarn needle to complete this project.

Size

You can make your no waste crochet washcloth any size you want or have yarn for. Mine is roughly 5 inches/12.7 cm square, which gave me a gauge of about 2.4 stitches per inch/2.5 cm. Gauge is not critical and will vary depending on the yarn you are using.

You could also do this holding two strands of a smooth cotton yarn together, or two balls of scrubby yarn, or whatever you have on hand.

How to Make a No Waste Crochet Washcloth

This washcloth is worked in half double crochet, which you can do on any chain length, plus 2 for the height of the stitch. It is worked with two strands of yarn held together throughout.

I started with a chain of 22 but quickly realized I was going to run out of yarn long before I got anywhere approaching square, so I ripped it out and started again with a chain of 14.

Work a half double crochet stitch in each chain across, starting with the third chain from the hook. This will give you 12 stitches.

You can chain 2 at the end of each row before turning, or work stacked stitches (two stitches on top of each other) to make your edges nice and straight.

Keep working HDC in each stitch until you’re about to run out of yarn.

I ran out of scrubby yarn when my piece was about 5 inches/12.7 cm wide and 3.5 inches/9 cm tall.

I could have stopped there but I really wanted to make it square, so I worked a couple more rows holding the smooth yarn double (I just used both ends of the same ball of yarn).

Finish off the last stitch when you’re ready or almost out of yarn, weave in your ends and cut any excess yarn.

This no waste crochet washcloth took just a few minutes to make and I think it would be a great one for body or for dishes. Now I just have a little bit more of that smooth cotton to use…
