This crochet headband pattern features leaves running across the top of the head and chain stitches around the back. It’s a quick and easy project that takes less than an hour to make and is a great use for a bit of leftover yarn from another project.

Supplies

I used a little more than 12 yards of Lion Brand Jeans yarn, but any worsted weight (medium, yarn weight 3) yarn will do. Really you can use any yarn weight you like as long as you use a corresponding crochet hook.

Here I used a size H/8/5mm crochet hook. You’ll also need scissors, a yarn needle and a ruler or tape measure.

Size

The size can easily vary depending on the size of your leaves and the length of your chains. My leaves are each about 2.5 inches/6.35 cm long and the full headband is about 20 inches/50.8 cm around. This is stretchy enough to fit a teen or adult sized head.

I started by measuring the top of my head from ear to ear about where a headband would go and on me that’s 12 inches/30.5 cm.

Using that measurement and reasoning that I wanted my piece to be about 20 inches/50.8 cm around, I determined I’d need 8 inches/20.3 cm of chain to go around the back of my head. You can use these measurements or measure yourself as you like.

Start with a slip knot and chain half of the length that you need for the back of the head. For me that was 4 inches/10cm, and came out to 16 chains.

Next chain 10 more to make the center of your leaf.

Starting with the chain next to the hook, work a single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, 3 treble crochets, a double crochet, half double crochet and a single crochet along the chain.

Take the yarn under the chain and the hook over the chain and work the same stitches on the other side of the chain from where you just worked, working back up toward the end of the chain.

Work a slip stitch at the end of the leaf to join the sides together.

Chain 11 (one to make space between the leaves and 9 for the leaf, plus the chain 1 at the beginning of the leaf).

Work another leaf as above on the chain you just made.

Repeat this two more times for a total of 4 leaves.

Chain another 4 inches/10 cm or whatever length you need to make it the rest of the way around your head.

Work a slip stitch into the first stitch of the chain on the other side to join.

Cut yarn and finish off stitch. Weave yarn ends into the back of the chain.

This leaf crochet headband uses the same leaf pattern as my leaf bookmark, but likewise you can change up the number and type of stitches you use to make leaves of different sizes. I really like these because they’re so easy and fun.
