This knit bookmark pattern uses an easy lace pattern that gives you practice with a couple of decreases you’ll use throughout your knitting journey. It’s a nice beginner lace knitting pattern and makes a cute bookmark for gifting or using yourself.

Materials
I used 23 yards of Spud & Chloe Fine, a sock yarn that has been discontinued. Anything in your stash will work!
You’ll also need a pair of US size 2/2.75mm knitting needles (I just used double pointed needles working flat), scissors and a yarn needle.
Size
You can make your knit bookmark any size you like, but mine is about 2.25 inches/5.7 cm wide and 6 inches/15.24 cm long after blocking. Gauge is not critical.
The stitch pattern used, which is called Cloverleaf Eyelet Rib in Barbara G. Walker’s A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, uses multiples of 6 stitches plus 1 if you want to make it wider. You could also use heavier yarn but I like sock yarn because makes a bookmark that’s not super thick.

How to Knit a Lace Knit Bookmark
Cast on 19 stitches. I used long tail cast on but you can use whatever method you prefer. The pattern starts on the wrong/back side as follows:

Rows 1, 3 and 5 (wrong side): Knit 1, *purl 5, knit 1. Repeat from * across.
Row 2: Purl 1, *knit 1, yarn over, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, yarn over, knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from * across.
Row 4: Purl 1, *knit 2, yarn over, slip slip knit, knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from * across.
Row 5: Purl 1, *knit 5, purl 1. Repeat from * across.

Repeat these rows to desired length, ending with row 6.

Bind off in pattern on the wrong side.

Cut yarn and block gently before weaving in ends. I just wet mine, stretched it gently to open up the eyelets, then laid it on a washcloth to dry. You can pin it to dry if you like to make the sides even straighter.

This lace knit bookmark is so sweet and a great way to practice lace knitting skills. Enjoy!

I just LOVE this and so happy to meet you on Craft Schooling Sunday, hope you’ll come again soon!
Hi! I’ve been knitting and frogging this pattern for hours now. This is only my third project, and I haven’t worked with such a fine yarn before. I’m really struggling to pull the yarn through after knitting two together (k2tog). Does anyone have any tips? The furthest I’ve managed to get is row 7, where I accidentally dropped a stitch. The yarn is so fine that I’m having a hard time picking it back up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble! Maybe try working some knit 2 togethers with a thicker yarn to practice?
As to dropping stitches and having to rip out, may I suggest a lifeline? https://www.ourdailycraft.com/2024/03/11/use-a-lifeline-knitting/ If you put it in one of the wrong side rows (like you could always run it through after you knit row 1) then you’ll know where you are and don’t have to rip out the whole thing if you make a mistake or lose a stitch.
Good luck!
Thanks so much Sara! Nice to meet you!
