I love all the crochet Halloween patterns for cute little things, so I decided this year I wanted to make a crochet cauldron. I actually made two of different sizes and with a couple of different design options to suit your DIY Halloween decor needs.
Supplies
Both of my cauldrons were made with worsted/medium/weight 4 yarn and a size I/5.5 mm crochet hook.
The smaller one used 12 grams of yarn, and I know it is Caron Simply Soft Party, so I can tell you that’s about 23 yards. I’m not sure what the yarn was for the larger one, but it weight 13 grams so about 25 yards should do the trick there.
This project is the perfect use for a little leftover ball of yarn, and you can easily adjust the size to use more or less yarn.
It’s nice to have a locking stitch marker to remind you where the end of the round is. You’ll also need scissors and a yarn needle.
Size
Gauge isn’t really important for this one but the size of your crochet cauldron will vary depending on your gauge. The small cauldron is 2.5 inches/6.35 cm across at the base and the sides are an inch/2.5 cm tall, excluding the feet, which are about an inch/2.5 cm long.
The larger cauldron is 3 inches/7.62 cm across the base and 2.5 inches/6.35 cm tall on the sides.
How to Make a Crochet Cauldron
Both sizes start out the same, with the base worked from the center out. I used a chain stitch start for both of mine but you can work a magic circle if you’d rather. Apologies for making something with black yarn, but it’s really easy even if the photos aren’t the best.
I did a chain of 5. Use a slip stitch to join the first stitch to the last stitch in a circle.
Work 5 single crochets into the circle. I like to work over the tail but you can weave it in later if you like. You can add your stitch marker here to mark the end of the round, or just count stitches around (which is what I do). I work in continuous rounds with no joining.
Work 2 single crochet in each stitch. 10 stitches total.
*Single crochet 1, then work 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from * around. 15 stitches total.
*Single crochet 2, then work 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from * around. 20 stitches total.
Continue in this manner, working one more stitch between the increases each round. For the small one I stopped after single crochet 4 then increase, while the larger one went to single crochet 6 between the increases. That gives you 30 stitches for the smaller crochet cauldron and 40 for the larger.
Whenever your base is the size you would like, work a round of single crochet in the back loop only. Here’s where I add my stitch marker so I don’t have to count every round.
Work rounds of single crochet until your sides measure 1 inch/2.5 cm for the smaller cauldron, or 2.5 inches/6.35 cm for the larger, or size of your choice.
Cut the yarn and fasten off the last stitch.
Cauldron Legs (Optional)
I decided for the little crochet cauldron I wanted to add some legs so I could make it look like it was on a fire.
To do this I started with a chain 5 again, then worked 4 single crochets across.
Repeat 3 times, so your piece is 4 rows long.
Fold it in half and work slip stitches to join the sides together.
Cut yarn and fasten off the last stitch.
Make 4.
Use the yarn end to sew the legs, relatively evenly spaced, around the base of the cauldron.
I used some plastic gems to represent fire and cotton balls to be the smoke coming out of my cauldron, but use whatever you like.
I didn’t put legs on the larger cauldron because I ran out of yarn. It makes a cute little candy dish and doesn’t have to read as a crochet cauldron in a non-Halloween setting.
