After yesterday’s playing with crayons and watercolors, I couldn’t resist doing another variation of that technique. This is a classic for kids but it’s fun for adults, too, because it’s like writing a secret message to yourself. Playing with white crayons and watercolors is like sending a secret message.

Working with White Crayon and Watercolors

Here again all you need is a crayon and a piece of cardstock or heavy paper — both white in this case — and some watercolor paints. white crayon drawing

Draw or write on the paper with the white crayon. If you look at it just right, you can see a bit of what I wrote and drew. As you’ll see from mine being a bit of a fail, you need to press pretty hard. You could also try doing this with an oil pastel if you have some.

Use the watercolor to paint the paper. I had four colors in the palette I was using, so I used them all. I loved the blue, so I repeated it. white crayon and watercolor art

You can’t completely see it in the pictures, but I wrote the word love, drew some hearts and made some scribbles.

Again, to make yours better than mine, use a fatter crayon, press down harder and/or make thicker marks.

In person it’s still kind of faint, but I like it anyway.

Have you ever tried this technique? It’s a fun way to send a secret message to your child, too, if you can get them to paint over your work.
