It feels silly to say “I’ve been really busy” because I know everyone has been and is, but I do feel like this month has gotten out of control. Two out-of-town trips, two sets of extra days off for the husband, a holiday weekend, thinking about my next book, getting ready for Listen to Your Mother, getting our backyard finished…it’s been a whirlwind.
And I don’t know if it’s stress or getting older (a big, scary number with a five at the end is coming up in a couple of months) or what but my body has not been happy with me. So I’m making an effort to eat healthier and listen to my body more.
But I love to snack. And I love things I can grab and go, especially when those things are actually healthy for me.
So I was excited to get the chance to try Sambazon’s superfood smoothies, thanks to #momsmeet. These little bottles of goodness are all natural and made with organic ingredients. They emphasize those antioxidant-filled and otherwise ultra-healthy superfoods like acai, blueberries, pomegranate, kale and ginger. Sambazon, in fact, has been a big part of introducing acai to the rest of the world (it’s a fruit found in the Brazilian rainforest that’s high in antioxidants and the same healthy fats found in olive oil).
I picked up three different varieties — local readers, you can get them at ONF — the Acai with Strawberry and Banana, Acai with Blueberry and Pomegranate and Supergreens with Kale and Ginger. Over the course of a few days I picked them up as snacks or an addition to breakfast on a morning without coffee.
All three were a pretty purple color and smelled sweet. The one with strawberries tasted predominantly like strawberries and is probably the most accessible to people who don’t like the taste of exotic fruits or greens. This one had the mildest flavor and was also the smoothest in texture, though the blueberry one was smooth, too.
The greens drink on the other hand had the strongest flavor and tasted a little grainy but was still good. This is the one for people who want to know they’re drinking something healthy. It’s probably a lot like a green smoothie you could make for yourself if you had the time.
And the there’s the blueberry pomegranate. This one might have been my favorite. The flavor is a little more interesting than the strawberry one, I guess because the combination of juices (this one has acai, apple, grape, acerola, blueberry and pomegranate) tastes a little more exotic than the strawberry banana one. If you want to feel like you’re in on the superfood secret, this is the drink for you.
The one complaint I have about the drinks is that they come in a 10.5 ounce bottle, which comes out to 1.3 servings per bottle. I don’t know why they couldn’t have just made it an 8 ounce bottle, since no one is going to leave 2.5 ounces in the container, or at least done the math on the nutrition facts so you could more easily figure out exactly what you’re drinking.
If you’d like to try out these tasty juice drinks on your busy life, now’s your chance. I’m giving away a Sambazon prize pack with three coupons for free bottles to sample and one of these beautiful wooden bowl and spoon sets, valued at $45.
