As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I’m doing the One Little Word challenge for 2013. My challenge is to live with the word create through the year. One way I’m doing that is to embrace creative challenges that come along that can help me to stretch and do some things I might not do otherwise.
So suddenly, because I’ve been saying yes to things, I’m involved in four crafty or craft related challenges now or soon. The first being One Little Word, which is actually a scrapbooking thing. I’m doing the class that’s linked above, and each month there’s a prompt that involves some kind of creative thing, whether that’s making something or writing something.
This month is a set of tags or little pages related to different ways to focus on our word throughout the year. Since I’m not really a scrapbooker I’m planning to do these on a bunch of plain gift tags I had leftover from the holidays that I’ll bind together somehow. Haven’t gotten that started yet.
Knitting and Sewing
Next up is a Downton Abbey knitalong with Luvinthemommyhood. This is just a really fun thing that I heard about and wanted to do. The idea is to knit (or crochet) something that’s somehow related to Downton Abbey while watching Downton Abbey, the new series of which starts in the US on Sunday.
There are prizes, but really it’s just about the fun of communal knitting for me. I’m thinking hard about the Lea Cloche from the excellent book Weekend Knits, because it looks like just the thing Lady Sybil would wear. (That’s a link to the project on Ravelry, by the way.)
Another short-term challenge I’m in on is the New Year’s sewalong at Sew Can She. It involves doing a project with the most popular tutorial of the year, the Herringbone Block from Bijou Lovely. It really is lovely, and I don’t know yet if I’ll try to make a whole quilt or just a pillow or something, but I’m excited to dust off the sewing machine and give it a try.
All we had to do this week was pick out fabrics, and this is what I have so far. A lot of that is a batch of fat quarters in kind of mod prints that I bought with no plan for. So I think this is just the thing.
Iron Craft
The last big challenge lasts all year and is known as Iron Craft. It’s a series of challenges, each lasting two weeks, revolving around some kind of theme.
The first challenge just got announced and its to make something using cotton. It can be anything from a sewn skirt to an upcylced tee to something crafted out of cotton balls.
I haven’t sat down with this one yet, either, but I may actually later today. It has something to do with shoes.
All this creativity in my life is really exciting and I know that creativity begets more creativity so I’m sure this will give me lots more crafty stuff to share with you all, too.
If you get in on one of these challenges or are doing another crafty challenge of any sort this year, I’d love to hear about it!
