In the spirit of embracing creative challenges, as I have been trying to do this year, I signed up to take part in a “mystery muse” program this month, which involves giving two handmade gifts to someone and receiving two gifts from someone else.

I decided to make my first gift a knit heart, because it’s that time of year, and they’re just pretty and easy to knit. I thought it would be fun to add some charms to it to make it a little more meaningful and like a piece of art than can be displayed through the year. knit heart charms

I hope she’ll take the hint and add some things that are meaningful to her as well. (The charms, by the way, were from Walmart. Nothing fancy.)

If you’re a knitter, this is a completely simple project. If you know how to count, increase and decrease, you’re golden. The original pattern was worked in bulky yarn and I’ve knit it so many times I can almost do it in my sleep.

This new one was worked in worsted weight yarn — some pink Peace Fleece that was actually left over from my first book, so it’s been sitting around for a while! — so it’s a little smaller, but I love it. I kind of what to make one for myself.

Are you working on any Valentine’s Day crafts? I’d love to hear about them!
