Today’s randomly chosen creative activity was to play with fancy lettering of your name or a word or phrase that you love.

I decided to play with my name.Try hand lettering your name or a word or phrase you love.

Hand Lettering Your Name

I grabbed an index card and a few different pens, Sharpies and markers and started writing my name in different styles.swirly script hand lettering

I think I like the first one the best.

The idea for me when doing hand lettering is to think of it more like drawing than writing.

It’s a little more controlled; a little more thinking goes into it.a card full of sarah

But not too much thinking, because after all this is still playing, too.

After a while your name — or whatever word you’re writing — ceases to have any meaning and is just a jumble of letters or shapes anyway.

It’s a strange feeling to have your name, the label you are to the world, became something that doesn’t mean anything.

But it’s also kind of fun.

A Digital Alternative

This is a simple challenge that you can do anywhere with any kinds of materials, but if you’re really resisting because your handwriting stinks or you “can’t draw,” then you are free to play with fonts on your computer to make your name, favorite quote or anything else on your mind into a fun design.monkey business canva

Because today is the start of Chinese New Year, and it’s the year of the monkey, I decided to let that be my inspiration.

I made this in Canva, starting with the social media template. I added a chevron background, changed the color to red, found a clip art monkey and then added the words.

In three different fonts.

Some monkey business indeed.
